Consultants Case Review

Senate House is the Grade II* listed administrative heart of the University of London’s Bloomsbury campus. Hannah was involved with a scheme for extensive refurbishment, remodelling and extension of this prominent building for the School of Oriental and African Studies. The key proposal was for the infilling of the centre of the block with a fully glazed and contemporary infill structure to act as a new social hub for the building. Hannah negotiated revisions to the design, working with Historic England to ensure that the extension would be a lightweight, sensitive and subordinate addition to this robust 1930s building. Extensive alterations were secured to the teaching and administrative spaces that allowed the building to evolve and respond to the requirements of the college in the 21st century whilst still maintaining the historic and architectural features and inherent special character of this unique building.
